The added pdir check was a hillarious(tm) overlooked bug indeed:
I tried to put .../initfs/initfs instead of .../initfs as the result.

Duly spotted by torabora@, thanks a lot.

Still the kmod+propagator+kernel-image combo needed some tweaking too,
